City Market Fair

See You Next Summer at 2016’s CITY mARTket Fair!

Artsplosure’s artist market in downtown Raleigh’s historic City Market has come to a close. Our “2nd Sunday CITY mARTket Fair” had a nice summer run, and concluded this past Sunday with it’s final event for the year.

We would like to thank all of the artist that participated in these events. You helped create the warm and inviting creative environment we were looking for with your paintings, photography, jewelry, ceramics, and other original artwork. We also appreciate all of the patrons that came out to explore the cobblestone streets surrounding City Market. Seeing you enjoy the festivities as much as we did brought smiles to our faces.

We look forward to seeing everyone next year for our summer series art and craft market. In the meanwhile, look out for First Night Raleigh to bring in the new year, and Artsplosure — The Raleigh Arts Festival. Two festivals that have been a staple in the downtown Raleigh area for years.

After the success of its July and August mARTkets, Artsplosure is excited to continue its partnership with Hakan Properties on its “2nd Sunday CITY mARTket Fair” on Sunday, September 13th from 10 a.m. through 4 p.m. As with the past events, the fair will take place in historic City Market located at 215 Wolfe Street, Raleigh. Both Artsplosure and City Market executives are thrilled with the success of the past two fairs!

“It’s an opportunity to bring to the community on a monthly basis a little of what makes our namesake spring festival so special” said Artsplosure Executive Director Michael Lowder. “Artsplosure is one of the Southeast’s most prestigious and competitive art and craft exhibitions, and we envision ‘2nd Sunday’ becoming an equally anticipated event for area art lovers.”

With just over 20 local artists around the breezy cobblestone streets in City Market, patrons were able to shop ceramics, jewelry, painting, photography and more original works of art. While adults and children alike enjoyed the participatory dance inside Market Hall, children were most excited for the make-and-take crafts that Artsplosure children’s programming is known for. Patrons were overheard saying it was the perfect “Sunday activity that both we as parents and our kids can both enjoy.” Children can certainly expect new art-making activities at this month’s event as well with beads for jewelry and more fun crafts.

On September 13, patrons can expect even more artists and a slightly extended footprint within the City Market streets. At 12:00 p.m., Artsplosure is excited to welcome the Longleaf School Dancers who will lead a participatory “All The Single Ladies Dance Along”.  In addition, the dance group Indigo Dance Evolution Academy will be inside Market Hall and invite patrons to learn their sizzling Bollywood numbers, which adults and children of all ages can join in on from 1:00 to 1:30 p.m. Afterwards, The NC Opera singers return with another “pop up chorus” from 1:45 to 2:15 p.m. and USA Dance will teach Salsa steps at 2:45 p.m. and the Rumba at 3:45 p.m. for free in an effort to promote their mission of bringing the pleasure and benefit of ballroom dance to the public.

This free-to-the-public art market fair will continue every second Sunday through October.

Step Inside to Dance and Sing!

Artsplosure is looking forward to hosting entertainment of MANY types on Sunday, August 9 at “2nd Sunday CITY mARTket Fair.” Of course from 10 a.m. through 4 p.m., our outdoor art market will line the beautiful cobblestone streets of City Market with artists selling handmade crafts from jewelry, painting, woodworks and more.

However, when you want to cool off, head into City Market’s Market Hall in the center of the market! Artsplosure is proud to welcome singers from NC Opera and ballroom dance fun from a Triangle Chapter of USA Dance to make your afternoon even more fun!

At 1 p.m., NC Opera singers Lora Fabio and John Cashwell will be accompanied by pianist Kate Lewis for a “pop up” opera performance in promoting opera to the Triangle community. In addition, new dance groups will be inside Market Hall teaching people of all ages and ability levels. USA Dance’s Curtis Bass will teach East Coast Swing at 2:30 p.m. and the Cha Cha at 3:30 p.m. for free in an effort to promote their mission of bringing the pleasure and benefit of ballroom dance to the public. Remember, you don’t need a partner or fancy shoes to dance. Just come have fun!

Artsplosure is known for its annual namesake spring festival that draws thousands to downtown Raleigh. A major feature of its spring festival is the juried Art Market, which features the talents of visual artists and fine crafters from North Carolina and nationally. The experimental “Second Sunday” fair will be similar but on a smaller scale, featuring from 20 to 40 mostly local artists in the market.

Artsplosure encourages the public to visit its market while in downtown each second Sunday of the month. This free-to-the-public art market will feature a jury-reviewed range of artists selling unique arts and crafts from painting, jewelry, woodworks and more.
